People suffering from neuromuscular conditions such as stroke, cerebral palsy or multiple sclerosis may think that chiropractic care has little to offer them. Since there is no cure for their underlying condition, much of the pain and discomfort they suffer is attributed to that condition and they may have been told that they must learn to live with it.

Because these conditions cause paralysis or lack of muscle control, a tremendous strain is placed on the body’s framework, especially the spine. Imbalance of muscle control from one side of the body to the other, and compensation for weak muscles by other muscle groups will cause spinal joints to move improperly or become immobile at several points. These spinal fixations not only lead to unnecessary pain, but they affect the proper function of associated muscles and may cause further weakness, aggravating the condition.

In conditions such as cerebral palsy, nerve irritation due to spinal problems seems to increase spasticity and decrease muscle control. As a result, many victims of neuromuscular disorders suffer more pain and disability than necessary.

Stroke, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis and other neuromuscular conditions are not contraindications for chiropractic care. Although chiropractic does not offer a cure, it can improve the quality of life and eliminate a great deal of needless pain.
